Through the year
Adjust to how often each bathroom is used. A guest bath may need less; a family bath may need more.
- Every week
- Squeegee or wipe glass and tile after showers to slow hard-water film.
- Every month
- Check caulk at the tub edge and corners for gaps; look under sinks and behind the toilet for damp.
- Every 3 months
- Clean shower heads and spout openings of scale; run every rarely used shower for a few minutes.
- Every 6 months
- Check grout for cracks, tap floor tiles for hollow spots, and test the diverter switches fully.
- Once a year
- Test the house main shutoff; check the ceiling below upstairs baths and the wall behind showers for stains.
- Every few years
- Recaulk the tub and shower; consider having a stiff or dripping cartridge cleaned or replaced.

Signs to stop and look closer
- A handle that has become stiffer since the last check
- Any drip from the spout or head with the water off
- Caulk that has separated again soon after being redone
- A floor tile that has started to move
- A new stain, however small, below or behind the bathroom
Why hard water changes the schedule
Fullerton's water, a blend of local groundwater and imported water from the city's own utility, leaves calcium and magnesium deposits wherever it evaporates. In a shower those deposits show up first on the head and glass, but the same scale forms inside the valve, where it stiffens cartridges and wears seals.
Cleaning the visible parts more often than you would in a soft-water area keeps sprays even and gives you a regular moment to notice early warning signs.
Common questions
Do I need a plumber for routine maintenance?
No. Cleaning heads, checking caulk and testing the main are homeowner tasks. Call a plumber when a check turns up a drip, stiffness or a leak.
How often should caulk be replaced?
Whenever it separates, cracks or has mold underneath. In a busy shower that can be every few years.
Is vinegar safe for my shower head?
It works on many finishes but not all. Check the manufacturer's care guidance first.
