Compare scope before price

A lower number that covers one joint and a higher number that covers the whole lateral are not competing for the same job. Before looking at totals, check that each estimate addresses the same findings, uses a method suited to them and includes the same access, permits and cleanup.

Give each contractor the same recording and findings list so they are quoting on the same information. Then fill in this worksheet from their written estimates, not from what was said on the phone.

Red flags in a written estimate

  • No mention of which findings the work addresses.
  • No method or pipe length stated.
  • Vague restoration language, such as surface work as needed.
  • No mention of permits for work that may need one.
  • No license number on the document.

Narrow estimate versus whole-line estimate

Narrow

  • Targets one or two findings
  • Leaves other old pipe in place
  • May suit a mostly sound line
  • Ask what the next likely problem is

Whole line

  • Addresses the full lateral
  • Larger disruption and scope
  • May suit many defects along the run
  • Ask how the house and main ends are connected

Follow-up questions for each contractor

  1. Why did you choose this method for my footage?
  2. What happens if you find more damage once work starts?
  3. Who checks with the City of Fullerton about permits?
  4. Will I get a recording of the finished line?

Common questions

How many estimates should I get?

For a large repair, two or three written estimates based on the same recording give a reasonable comparison.

Should every contractor re-film the line?

Some will want their own look, which is reasonable. Sharing your recording first can save time.

What if the methods differ completely?

Ask each contractor why their method fits your findings, and compare the answers against the footage.
