One clog versus a pattern
Almost every house has a main-line clog at some point. Wipes, grease or a heavy load of paper can block even a healthy pipe. A single clog cleared and never repeated is not a strong reason for a camera inspection.
A pattern is different. If the line backs up every few months, after every holiday gathering or every spring, something in the pipe is catching material or letting roots in. Cable machines and jetting restore flow, but they do not show you whether the cause is roots, a break, a sag, an offset or buildup. The camera does.
Common causes of repeat clogs
| Cause | Clue between clogs | What the camera shows |
|---|---|---|
| Root intrusion | Roots on the cable; clogs on a seasonal cycle. | Roots at one or more joints or cracks. |
| Belly or sag | Sludge on the cable; clogs at the same distance. | Standing water in one stretch. |
| Offset joint | Paper hang-ups at one point. | A step or lip where sections meet. |
| Scale in cast iron | Rust flakes; gradual slowing. | Rough, narrowed pipe walls. |
| Grease buildup | Kitchen drains slow first. | Coating on the walls, often toward the house end. |
| Broken pipe | Soil or sand in drains. | Cracks, missing pieces or a collapse. |
Keep a simple clog log
Notes like these turn a vague history into something a plumber can work with.
- Each backup
- Date, which fixtures backed up first and what was running at the time.
- Each clearing
- What method was used, how far the cable went and what came out on it.
- Each inspection
- The recording, the summary and the footage of each finding.
- Each change
- New trees, landscaping, a driveway or construction near the line.
When a camera makes sense
- Ifthe line has been cleared more than once in a yearThenask for a camera inspection after the next clearing.
- Ifthe cable keeps bringing back rootsThenfilm the line to find out how many joints are involved.
- Ifthe clog always happens at the same distanceThenfilm and locate that spot.
- Ifyou only had one clog after a known cause like wipesThena camera may not be needed yet; keep notes in case it repeats.
Habits that help any lateral
- Keep wipes out of toilets, including ones labeled flushable.
- Let cooking grease cool and put it in the trash instead of the sink.
- Use a strainer in kitchen and shower drains.
- Avoid planting new trees directly over the known route of the line.
- Keep the cleanout accessible for the next visit.
What to ask after the next clearing
- Can you run a camera now that the line is open?
- At what distance did the cable hit resistance?
- Is what you found something cleaning will keep fixing, or will it keep coming back?
- What would you check at a follow-up inspection?
Common questions
Is hydro jetting better than cabling for repeat clogs?
They work differently and suit different problems. The camera can help a plumber choose, and can confirm the result afterward.
Why does my line clog more in certain seasons?
Seasonal patterns are often linked to root growth or to heavier use around holidays. A log of dates helps sort that out.
Do I need a camera every time the line is cleared?
No. One good inspection and recording gives a baseline. Filming again makes sense when the pattern changes or before a repair decision.
