Why quotes differ

Two quotes for a sewer camera inspection can look very different and still describe the same visit, or look similar and describe very different ones. One may include clearing the line, locating, a recording and a written report; another may cover only a quick look with the camera. Comparing them without knowing what is included is guesswork.

The most useful thing you can do is describe your situation clearly and ask each contractor to list what their price covers. The factors below are the ones that most often change the scope.

Factors that change the scope

FactorWhy it matters
AccessA clean, reachable cleanout is simpler than pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent.
Line conditionA backed-up line usually has to be cleared before the camera can see anything.
Length of the runLonger laterals, or inspecting both toward the street and back toward the house, take more time.
LocatingMarking findings on the surface, with depth estimates, adds a step.
Recording and reportA full recording and a written summary take extra time to produce.
TimingAsk whether after-hours or same-day visits are priced differently.
Follow-upA second camera run after cleaning or repair may be separate.

Ask each quote to state

  • Whether line clearing is included or separate.
  • How the plumber will access the line.
  • Whether the camera will go to the city main.
  • Whether locating and depth marking are included.
  • Whether you get the recording and a written report.
  • Whether resetting a toilet, if one is pulled, is included.
  • That any repair will be estimated separately, in writing.

A narrow quote versus a complete one

Camera look only

  • Camera run with a verbal summary
  • May stop at the first major finding
  • No locating or marks
  • Little to share for a second opinion

Full inspection

  • Camera run to the main where possible
  • Findings listed by footage
  • Key spots located and marked
  • Recording and written report you keep

Spending wisely

  • Ifyou only need to know whether the line is in fair shapeThena basic inspection with a recording may be enough.
  • Ifyou expect a repair decisionThenmake sure locating and a written report are included.
  • Ifyou are buying a homeThenask for a complete inspection to the main and a recording you keep.
  • Ifthe line is backed upThenask for clearing and the camera on the same visit, and how each is priced.

Questions that make quotes comparable

  1. What exactly is included in this price?
  2. What would add to it?
  3. If you cannot complete the inspection, how is that handled?
  4. Is the repair estimate free, separate or included?
  5. What is your CSLB license number?

Common questions

Why does this site not list prices?

Prices vary by contractor, access, line condition and what is included, so we do not publish prices on this preview site. Ask each licensed plumber, including us, for a written quote.

Is a free camera inspection a good deal?

It can be, but ask what it includes and whether you will get the recording. An inspection you cannot review or share is less useful.

Does clearing the line cost extra?

Often it is priced separately. Ask before the visit so you are not surprised.
