Why time away matters
When you are home, a damp carpet or the sound of running water gets noticed within hours. When the house is empty, a supply hose that splits or a pinhole that opens can run for days. Closing the main shutoff is the simplest protection, but it needs a little planning so the yard and appliances are handled properly.
A before-and-after meter reading is also a free leak test: if the house was shut down and the number changed anyway, something needs a closer look.
Before you leave
- Read the meter.Write down the reading and take a dated photo.
- Decide on irrigation. If the sprinklers must run while you are gone, confirm the irrigation supply is separate from the house main. If it is not, ask a plumber or a neighbor to help with plants.
- Set the water heater.Use the vacation setting on a gas heater or switch off power to an electric one if you will close the main. If you ever smell gas, leave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.
- Turn off appliance valves.Close washer hose valves and the ice maker supply.
- Close the main shutoff. If your setup allows, close the house main for the trip.
Quick walk-through
- No faucets dripping.
- Toilets not running after the last flush.
- No damp spots under sinks.
- Water heater area dry.
- Someone you trust has a key and knows where the main shutoff is.

Common questions
Is it safe to turn off the main for a long trip?
For most homes it is a sensible precaution, as long as the water heater is set appropriately and any needs such as irrigation are planned for.
What about a pool auto-fill?
An auto-fill can hide a leak or run constantly if a pool leaks. Note its level before and after the trip.
Can a neighbor check on the house instead?
Yes. Show them where the main shutoff is and ask them to look under sinks and near the water heater.
