The leak is fixed, the water is not gone

Drywall, wood framing, carpet pad and the soil under a slab can hold a lot of water. If a cavity is closed up while still wet, it can stay damp for weeks and invite mold, odors and warped flooring. Drying is a separate step from the plumbing repair, and it often involves a different trade.

Southern California's generally dry air helps, but enclosed wall cavities and covered floors do not dry well on their own. Moving air and, when needed, dehumidifiers make the difference.

Retest first

  1. Run the meter test again. With all fixtures off, confirm the meter is still. If it moves, there may be a second leak.
  2. Check the repair area.Look at the repaired pipe or patch for any seeping before it is covered.
  3. Ask for the pressure test result. Many plumbers pressure test after a repair. Ask what they found.

Drying checklist

  • Remove soaked carpet pad; it rarely dries well and can be replaced.
  • Pull baseboards on wet walls so air can reach the bottom of the drywall.
  • Open cabinet doors and remove toe kicks if water reached under cabinets.
  • Run fans and a dehumidifier in the affected room.
  • Keep openings uncovered until moisture readings say the area is dry.
  • Use a moisture meter, or ask a professional to, before closing walls or reinstalling flooring.

When to bring in help

  • IfThe wet area is small and was caught quicklyFans, a dehumidifier and open access may be enough. Recheck with a moisture meter.
  • IfWater spread under flooring, cabinets or into several roomsA water damage restoration contractor may be needed to dry it properly.
  • IfYou see visible mold or smell persistent mustinessAsk about a mold assessment and talk to your insurer.
  • IfWater came from a drain or toilet lineTreat it as contaminated: clean and disinfect, and keep people and pets away until done.

Watch the weeks after

First days
Run drying equipment and check moisture daily.
First week
Look for new stains, odors or flooring changes near the repair.
Next bill
Compare usage with the bill before the leak.
Ongoing
Run a meter test every few months, especially in an older home.

Common questions

How long does drying take?

It depends on how much water escaped, the materials involved and the equipment used. Rely on moisture readings rather than a set number of days.

Does the plumber handle drying and repairs to finishes?

Usually not. Plumbers fix the pipe; drying, drywall, flooring and mold work are often separate contractors. Ask before work starts.

Could there be a second leak?

Yes, especially in older pipe. That is why a meter test after the repair is worthwhile.
