Reading the quotes

Two quotes for the same gas job can differ because one includes the permit, the meter coordination and patching drywall while the other leaves those out. Line them up item by item before comparing the totals. A quote that is vague about the pipe size or skips the pressure test is not a cheaper version of the same job.

Be cautious of anyone who pressures you to decide on the spot, suggests skipping a permit, or asks for payment in a way that leaves no record. Get the final scope and price in writing before work starts.

Questions to ask on the phone

  1. Is my Fullerton address in your service area?
  2. What is your CSLB license number?
  3. Who will be on site doing the work?
  4. Will you pull the permit and do a pressure test?
  5. What is not included in your price?

Common questions

Can a handyman do gas line work?

Check the CSLB rules for the job. Gas piping work generally calls for a licensed contractor in the right classification.

What does the CSLB lookup show?

License status, classification, bond and workers' compensation information, and any disciplinary actions on record.

How many quotes should I get?

For non-emergency work, two or three written quotes let you compare scope as well as price.
