What the connector does

Rigid gas pipe stops at a shutoff valve behind each appliance. A flexible connector bridges the last short gap so a range can be slid out for cleaning, or a dryer moved to reach the vent. That flexibility is also why it wears out: it gets bent, kinked, crushed against the wall and twisted every time the appliance moves.

In many 1950s to 1970s Fullerton houses, ranges and dryers have been replaced several times. Sometimes the old connector was reused, sometimes it was stretched to reach a new appliance in a slightly different spot. Either way, a connector that has seen several appliances is worth a look.

Signs a connector should be replaced

Reuse or replace?

Reusing the old connector

  • Unknown age and condition
  • Fittings were already tightened once and may not seal the same way twice
  • Length may not suit the new appliance's gas inlet
  • Saves a small part, but it is the weakest link in the system

Installing a new listed connector

  • Sized and rated for the appliance
  • Correct length, with no stretching or joining
  • New fittings matched to the valve and inlet
  • Leak tested at installation

How a connector replacement is usually done

  1. Shut off the appliance valve. The quarter-turn valve behind the appliance is closed. If there is no working valve, gas to the house may need to be shut off and one added.
  2. Remove the old connector. Both ends are disconnected and the old line is discarded, not saved.
  3. Check the valve. An old, stiff or leaking appliance valve is often replaced at the same time while everything is open.
  4. Install the new connector.A connector rated for that appliance type is installed with the right fittings and without kinks or tension.
  5. Leak test and relight. The valve is opened, every joint is checked with leak solution, and the appliance is lit and its flame checked.

What affects the scope

A straightforward swap is a small job. It grows if the shutoff valve is missing or failing, if the rigid pipe ends in an awkward spot that forces a long connector, if the appliance was moved and the gas outlet needs to be relocated, or if the connector runs through a cabinet and the pipe should be extended instead. Ask for the plan in writing and confirm with the city whether any part of the job needs a permit.

Common questions

Can I replace a gas connector myself?

Gas connections should be done by a licensed contractor who can leak test them. If you ever smell gas after an appliance is moved, leave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.

How often should connectors be replaced?

There is no single schedule. Replace one whenever the appliance is replaced, or when it shows damage, kinks or leaks.

Is a longer connector better?

No. Use the shortest connector that reaches without tension. If it needs to be long, extending the rigid pipe is often the better fix.
