How to use the calendar

Fullerton's mild climate means the furnace may sit idle for months, the barbecue sees heavy use in summer, and pool heaters run on and off with the seasons. Each change in use is a good moment to look at the gas appliance involved.

Most items are looking-and-listening checks you can do yourself. Anything involving gas fittings, valves or appliance internals belongs to a licensed contractor.

The year at a glance

January
Test carbon monoxide alarms. Review the household gas smell plan with everyone.
March
Look at the water heater: strapping intact, vent connected, nothing stored against it.
May
Before barbecue season, look over outdoor gas valves and the area over buried lines for dead grass strips.
July
Check the dryer vent duct for lint and crushing; confirm the dryer connector is not kinked behind the machine.
September
Earthquake readiness: meter wrench in place, shutoff map current, flexible connectors in good shape.
October
Before first furnace use, have it serviced if due, and clear the furnace area of storage.
November
Watch the furnace flame and pilot on first starts; log anything odd.
Any time
After remodeling, digging or moving appliances, look for new damage to gas lines and connectors.

Ask at your next service visit

  3. Do any of my appliances have venting concerns?
  4. Is my gas piping sized for what I am planning to add?

Common questions

How often should gas appliances be serviced?

Follow each appliance maker's recommendations. They differ between water heaters, furnaces and other appliances.

Can I flush my water heater myself?

Many owners do, following the maker's instructions. Hard water in the area can leave sediment, so ask how often yours needs it.

Do I need to check anything in summer?

Outdoor gas lines and the dryer vent see heavy use then. A quick look is worthwhile.
