What to ask, and why
How do I check a gas line contractor's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. You will see the classification, whether the license is active, and its bond and complaint record.
Will they pull the permit, or leave it to me?
Settle this before you agree to the job. The contractor doing the work usually arranges the permit and inspection. If anyone suggests skipping it, check with the city.
Will the line be pressure tested before the gas comes back on?
It should be. Ask how they run the test and whether you can see the gauge. An untested repair is unfinished.
Who will be in my attic?
Ask whether employees or subcontractors will do the work, and whether those people work under the license you checked.
What does the price cover?
Get it in writing: the pipe replaced or added, the shutoffs and connectors, the permit, the test, and relighting every appliance afterward.
What if the meter needs more capacity?
SoCalGas handles meter and service changes, not the contractor. Ask whether your project needs a load review and who will contact SoCalGas about it.
