Why a closed valve is not enough

When a gas range or dryer is replaced with an electric one, installers often turn the old appliance valve off and leave it hanging behind the new appliance. One bumped handle while sliding an appliance, cleaning or moving boxes can open it, and with nothing connected, gas flows straight into the room.

The fix is simple: a proper cap or plug on the outlet of the valve, or removal of the branch back to where it tees off the main line, followed by a test. It is a small job, but it should be done by someone who can seal and test gas fittings.

Cap at the appliance or remove the branch?

Cap at the old appliance location

  • Quick, with little disruption
  • Leaves the option to go back to gas later
  • Valve plus a cap gives two barriers
  • Outlet must stay accessible and visible

Remove back to the tee

  • No dead-end line left in the wall or attic
  • Fewer fittings that could leak in future
  • More work if the branch runs through a finished wall
  • Gas would need to be re-run to go back

How a gas line is properly capped

  1. Shut off.The appliance valve is closed; for removing a branch, gas to the house may be shut off at the meter.
  2. Disconnect. The flexible connector is removed and discarded with the old appliance.
  3. Cap or cut back.A cap or plug is installed on the valve outlet, or the branch is removed and the tee plugged.
  4. Test. The cap or plug and nearby joints are checked with leak solution, and the system is pressure tested where gas was shut off.
  5. Relight and label.Any pilots that went out are relit, and the capped outlet can be labeled so the next owner knows what it is.

Look for leftover gas outlets

Older Fullerton homes often have outlets from appliances that were removed years ago.

Ask the contractor

  1. Will you cap the outlet or remove the branch back to the tee, and why?
  2. Will you replace an old or stiff valve before capping it?
  3. How will you test the cap and the rest of the system?
  4. Do I need a permit for this in my city?
  5. If I plan to go back to gas later, which option makes that easier?

Common questions

Can I leave the valve turned off and call it done?

A valve alone is easy to open by accident. Have a cap or plug installed and tested.

I found an uncapped valve behind my dryer. Is that urgent?

If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside. If not, leave the handle alone and have it capped soon.

Does capping a line need a permit?

It varies. Check with the city building division.
