How a lateral works
A sewer lateral carries wastewater from the house drains to the public sewer, usually in the street. It works by gravity, so it needs a steady downward slope. On a lot that slopes toward the street, gravity helps. On a lot set below the street, the line may run a long way or the home may need a pump to lift waste up.
Older Fullerton homes often have cast-iron or clay laterals. Clay is joined in short sections, and those joints are where tree roots find water and work their way in. Cast iron can corrode and scale inside. Soil movement on slopes can shift sections out of line, creating offsets or low spots where waste settles.
Warning signs of lateral trouble
Diagnosis before digging
- Clear the line.A plumber opens the blockage through a cleanout so the house can drain again.
- Camera inspection.A camera run down the lateral shows roots, cracks, offsets, sags and the material of each section.
- Locate and mark.A locator traces the camera head from above to mark depth and position, which matters on slopes and near walls.
- Discuss options. With the footage and locations in hand, the plumber can compare cleaning, spot repair, lining or replacement.
Repair approaches compared
| Approach | Good fit | Watch-outs on a slope |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning and root cutting | Roots without structural damage | Roots usually return; may be ongoing maintenance |
| Hydro jetting | Grease, scale and root mats | Line condition should be checked first |
| Spot repair | One damaged section | Excavation near walls, steps or trees needs care |
| Trenchless lining or bursting | Long runs, hard-to-dig ground | Sags and severe offsets may limit options |
| Open-trench replacement | Badly failed or misaligned lines | Restoring slopes, drainage and landscaping |
What affects the scope
Depth and length of the line, how many sections are damaged, whether the route passes under a retaining wall, driveway or mature tree, and how much landscaping or hardscape must be restored all shape the job. Who is responsible for which part of the lateral, and whether a permit or street work is involved, varies; check with the City of Fullerton.
Questions to ask
- Can I see the camera footage and the marked problem spots?
- What material is my lateral, and how deep is it?
- Is trenchless realistic given the slope and any sags?
- How will retaining walls, steps and plants be protected or restored?
- Which part of the line is my responsibility, and is a permit needed?
Common questions
Will root cutting fix the problem permanently?
Usually not. Cutting clears the line, but roots tend to grow back through the same joints. Repairing or lining those joints addresses the entry points.
Where is my sewer cleanout?
Often near the house at the front or side, sometimes at the property line. A plumber can locate it if you cannot find it.
Is a camera inspection worth it before buying a hillside home?
Many buyers find it useful, since lateral condition is hard to see and can be costly to repair.
