The situation

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

An older home on a sloped lot with a mature tree in the front yard has slow drains for a few weeks. One evening, dirty water rises in the lowest shower while the washing machine drains.

  1. The family stops the washer and stops using all water in the house.
  2. Children and pets are kept out of the bathroom; nobody touches the water without gloves.
  3. They locate the sewer cleanout near the front of the house and call a licensed plumber.

The backup is contained, and nothing more flows into the house while they wait.

Diagnosis

  1. Clear the line. The plumber opens the line through the cleanout, and the house drains again.
  2. Camera inspection. The camera shows a clay lateral with roots entering at several joints along the downhill run toward the street.
  3. Locate. The worst joints are marked from above; one sits under a garden path, another near the tree.
  4. Discuss. The plumber walks the owners through the footage and the options.

Options in this example

OptionProsCons
Periodic root cuttingSmallest immediate stepRoots return through the same joints
Spot repairs at worst jointsTargets known entry pointsOther joints may fail later; digging near the tree
Trenchless liningSeals joints along the run with little diggingSuitability depends on sags and offsets
Full replacementNew pipe end to endMost excavation on a slope with landscaping

Outcome

In this invented example, the camera shows no major sags, so lining is a realistic option. The owners get written scopes for spot repair and for lining, ask about permits and street work (which they are told to confirm with the City of Fullerton), and choose lining to avoid digging near the tree and path.

A follow-up camera run after the work shows smooth pipe through the old root joints.

What this example shows

Common questions

Is this a real job?

No. It is an invented example.

Should the tree be removed?

Not necessarily. Sealing joints addresses where roots enter. Tree decisions are a separate question.

How do I clean up after a backup?

Wear gloves, keep others away and disinfect affected surfaces. For larger backups, consider professional cleanup.
