Why keep a log

A drain that is a little slow on Monday and gurgling by Friday tells a story. So does a water bill that creeps up while the household's routine stays the same. On their own these are easy to dismiss; written down with dates, they point to a main line, a hidden leak or a failing part.

When you finally call someone, a short log answers the questions they will ask anyway: when it started, what makes it worse and what you have already tried.

  • IfMeter readings jump with no change in useThenRun the meter leak test and look for a hidden or slab leak.
  • IfA ceiling stain is growingThenFind the source and stop the water feeding it.
  • IfAny gas smellThenStop logging. Leave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.

Bring these answers to the plumber

  1. When did you first notice it?
  2. Is it constant, or only when certain fixtures run?
  3. Has it gotten worse, and how fast?
  4. What have you already tried?
  5. How old is the house and the plumbing, if known?

Common questions

How long should I keep a log before calling?

Log while you watch a minor symptom. Anything spreading quickly, involving sewage or gas, or causing water damage should not wait.

Is a phone note as good as paper?

Yes, as long as each entry has a date and time. Photos with timestamps help too.

Why log meter readings?

A steady rise with no change in use is one of the clearest early signs of a hidden leak.
