Early warning signs

  • More than one drain slowing at the same time.
  • Gurgling from a toilet or tub when another fixture drains.
  • Water rising in the tub or shower when the washing machine empties.
  • A sewage smell near floor drains or the outside cleanout.
  • Toilets that need more than one flush to clear normally.

What is going on in the pipe

Every drain in the house joins into one main line that leaves the building and becomes the lateral running to the public sewer. When that line narrows, the lowest fixtures feel it first because water backs up to the lowest opening.

In Anaheim's older neighborhoods, many laterals are original cast iron or clay. Roots enter through clay joints and cracks, cast iron scales on the inside, and older lines can sag so that solids settle in the low spot. Grease and wipes then catch on all of it.

What to do when you notice it

  1. Cut back on water

Hold off on laundry, dishwashers and long showers until the line is cleared.

  2. Find the cleanout

Look outside near the foundation or the property line for a capped pipe. A plumber will usually want to use it.

  3. Skip the chemicals

Drain cleaners rarely touch a main line blockage and make the job more hazardous for whoever clears it.

  4. Call before it overflows

Clearing a slow main line is simpler and cleaner than dealing with sewage on the floor.

Clearing methods

MethodWhat it doesOften used for
Cable machine with cutting headBores through the blockage and cuts rootsRestoring flow on an emergency call
Hydro jettingScours grease, scale and root fibers off pipe wallsGrease buildup and recurring clogs
Camera inspectionShows the inside of the line on a screenFinding roots, cracks, offsets and sags after clearing
Spot repair or liningFixes a damaged sectionBroken or root-damaged pipe found by camera

What drives the cost

  • Whether there is a usable outside cleanout.
  • How far down the line the blockage is.
  • Snaking versus jetting, and whether a camera inspection is added.
  • Roots or broken pipe that need repair beyond clearing.
  • After-hours timing.

What to ask

  1. Was it roots, grease or a broken pipe?
  2. How long is the clearing likely to last before roots return?
  3. Would you recommend a camera inspection, and why?
  4. If repair is needed, is a permit required? Check with the city if unsure.

Common questions

Why does my main line clog every year or two?

Recurring clogs in older Anaheim laterals are often roots growing back through joints or a sag collecting debris. A camera inspection usually shows which.

Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?

It depends on the pipe's condition. Many plumbers inspect with a camera first, since jetting can harm pipe that is already badly broken.

Can I keep using the toilet if the drains are just slow?

Use as little water as possible. Heavy use can push a slow line into a full backup.
