What to ask, and why
How do I check a license at 2 a.m.?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup runs around the clock and shows the status and classification.
Do I have to take the first price?
No. Once the water is off you can ask for a temporary repair, or say no and call someone else in the morning.
They want to start before giving a price.
Ask for the price in writing first, after-hours charges included. Diagnosis and repair can be priced separately.
Will insurance cover it?
Your policy decides that. Photograph the damage, keep every invoice and call your insurer once the leak is stopped.
I rent. Who do I call?
Close the water if you can reach the valve, then tell your landlord or property manager. They usually send the plumber.
Does the repair need a permit?
Some do, water heater replacement and repiping among them. Check with the city building department or ask the plumber.
