What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Confirm the name, status and classification match the business you are hiring.
What should be in writing before work starts?
The scope of work, how pricing is calculated, whether a camera inspection is included, and what happens if the line cannot be cleared on the first attempt.
A plumber says I need a new sewer line. How do I know?
Ask to see the camera footage, where the problem is and how far from the house, and what the options are. For a large repair, a second opinion with its own inspection is reasonable.
Is hydro jetting safe for my old pipe?
It depends on the pipe. Ask whether the line was inspected first. Jetting badly cracked or deteriorated pipe can make damage worse.
Sewage came up inside. What now?
Keep people and pets away, stop using water, and do not handle sewage without protection. Cleaning contaminated flooring and drywall is often separate work from clearing the drain.
Will the plumber need to cut into my floor?
Usually not for cleaning. Breaking into a slab is a repair decision that should follow a camera inspection and a written explanation.
