How a grease clog forms

Hot fat and oil look liquid going down the sink, but they cool within a few feet of pipe and cling to the walls. Each wash adds another layer, along with rice, coffee grounds, eggshell grit and disposal output. Over months the opening narrows until a heavy load of dishwater cannot get through.

In many older Anaheim homes the kitchen drain runs a long way under the slab before it meets the main, and cast-iron pipe with interior scale from hard water gives grease an easy surface to grab. That is why kitchen clogs tend to sit further down the line than the trap under the sink.

What you can reasonably try

Skip these if a chemical opener has been used; tell the plumber instead.

  1. Stop the dishwasher and disposal. Both send water into the same drain and will only fill the sink further.
  2. Plunge with the other side sealed. On a double sink, plug the second basin with a stopper or wet rag so the plunger's pressure goes toward the clog.
  3. Clean the P-trap.With a bucket underneath, loosen the trap's slip nuts, empty and clean it, and reassemble hand-tight. If the trap is clear, the clog is further in the wall or under the floor.
  4. Know when to stop.If the sink still holds water after the trap is clean, the blockage is in the branch line and needs a cable or a plumber.

Cable or jetting?

  • IfFirst clog in years, cleared fast with a cableThenCabling is usually enough. Change what goes down the sink.
  • IfClogs return every few months in the same lineThenAsk about jetting to clean the walls, after confirming the pipe is in good shape.
  • IfThe line is old cast iron with heavy scaleThenAsk whether a camera look should come first, since aggressive cleaning can stress thin pipe.
  • IfThe dishwasher and both basins back up and other drains gurgleThenThe problem may be in the main line, not the kitchen branch.

Habits that prevent the next one

Common questions

Does pouring boiling water clear a grease clog?

It may soften grease near the top of the drain, but the fat usually re-hardens further down. Very hot water can also stress plastic traps and joints, so it is not a reliable fix.

Is my garbage disposal causing the clogs?

A disposal does not remove food from the drain, it only grinds it smaller. Heavy use with grease and starchy food is a common cause of kitchen line clogs.

Why does my kitchen sink clog but the bathroom drains are fine?

Kitchen and bathroom fixtures often drain through different branches before reaching the main. A kitchen-only clog usually means the blockage is in the kitchen branch.
