Drain cleaning and clog removal, Anaheim CA

Drain cleaning in Anaheim that finds out why it clogged

A slow sink is one clog. Every drain gurgling at once is your main line. We clear the line, run your fixtures to prove it drains, and show you what blocked it so you can decide what happens next.

One slow drain, or all of them?

Answer that and you know whether to grab a plunger or turn off the taps.

One fixture is slow

The rest of the house drains fine. The clog sits in that sink, tub or toilet, or in the short branch behind it. Clean the stopper or trap, use the right plunger, and call if it won't move.

Usually a fixture clog

Several drains act up together

The tub fills when someone flushes, toilets gurgle when the washer drains, or water appears at a floor drain or the cleanout. The blockage sits downstream of all of them.

Main line: stop using water and call

The water shows you where the clog is

One slow fixture points to a clog in its own trap or branch line. Water rising in the tub when you flush, or every drain slowing together, points to the main line that carries the whole house out to the city sewer.

Much of Anaheim went up between the 1950s and the 1970s: single-story slab homes with cast-iron drains under the floor and clay or cast-iron laterals running to the street. Fifty-plus years of grease, hard-water scale and tree roots narrow those pipes from the inside. Newer homes, including much of Anaheim Hills, run plastic pipe, and plastic still collects grease and wipes.

We pick the tool that suits your pipe, clear the line, and run several fixtures at once before we call it done. When the main keeps clogging, we put a camera down it and show you the footage.

Signs a plunger won't fix it

One of these can be a simple clog. Two together point to the main line.

  • Several drains are slow at the same time, especially on the lowest floor.
  • Water rises in the tub or shower when the toilet is flushed or the washer drains.
  • Gurgling from a sink or toilet when a different fixture is running.
  • A sewage smell indoors or near the outdoor cleanout cap.
  • The same drain clogs again within days or weeks of being cleared.
  • Water or sewage seeping out of the cleanout or a floor drain.
  • Soggy, sunken or unusually green patches of lawn along the path of the sewer line.

Which drain, which clog

What blocks each drain in a house, what you can try yourself, and the point where you should stop and call. Never plunge or open a trap after a chemical opener went in.

Drain Usual cause Try this first Call us when
Kitchen sink Cooled grease, food scraps, coffee grounds and disposal output. Plug the other basin and plunge. With a bucket underneath, pull and rinse the P-trap, as long as no chemical went in first. Both basins and the dishwasher back up together, or the clog returns within weeks.
Bathroom sink Hair and toothpaste wrapped around the pop-up stopper. Lift out the stopper and clean it. A plastic drain strip reaches the hair below. It stays slow with a clean stopper and trap.
Tub or shower Hair and soap film at the strainer or in the trap. Pull the strainer and the hair under it, then run hot tap water. The tub fills when a toilet flushes. That's the main line.
Toilet Too much paper, wipes, or a dropped object. Use a flange plunger. If the bowl is high, don't flush again; close the valve behind the toilet. Other drains gurgle along with it, or something solid went down.
Washer standpipe Lint and small items, or a line downstream that can't keep up. Clean the washer's filter and pause the laundry. It overflows during the drain cycle more than once.
Main line Roots, grease, scale, wipes, or a cracked, offset or sagging pipe. Stop using water. Find the cleanout and leave the cap on if the line is full. Right away. It needs a machine at the cleanout, and often a camera.

Do this before anyone arrives

  1. 1

Stop sending water down. Pause the washer, dishwasher, showers and flushing until the line is clear.

  2. 2

Keep kids and pets away from any sewage, and wash anything it touches with soap and hot water.

  3. 3

If a fixture or supply line is overflowing, close its shutoff valve. If that fails, close the main water shutoff.

  4. 4

Leave the chemical openers on the shelf. They won't clear a main line, they eat at old pipe, and they burn whoever opens the drain next.

  5. 5

Find your outdoor cleanout and note which drains misbehaved first. Leave the cap on if the line is full; it can spray sewage.

Smell gas? Leave the house and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.

How we clear a drain

Your pipe and your clog decide the method. Ask us about any step as we go.

  1. 1

    Find the blocked line

We ask which fixtures acted up first, then run a few to tell a branch clog from a main line problem before any tool comes out.

  2. 2

    Pick the way in

Branch clogs come out through the fixture or its trap. Main lines go through a cleanout. With no usable cleanout, we pull a toilet and talk to you about adding access.

  3. 3

    Clear it

A cable with a cutting head breaks through grease, hair, paper and roots. Hydro jetting scours the pipe walls clean, and we only use it on pipe we know is sound.

  4. 4

    Look inside

For main line backups and repeat clogs, a sewer camera shows roots, cracks, offset joints and sags, with the distance to each one.

  5. 5

    Prove the flow

We run several fixtures together. One quick flush after a cable can hide a partial blockage.

  6. 6

    Write it down

You get a plain account of what we found and did, and any repair we suggest, before you approve anything more.

Four Anaheim drain problems and what clears them

Kitchen sink after a holiday dinner

Cooking grease poured down the sink cools and sticks to the pipe, collecting food scraps until the line closes. A cable clears the clog; repeated grease clogs on an older cast-iron kitchen line may need jetting, if the pipe is sound.

Tub fills when the toilet flushes

This is the classic main line pattern in a single-story slab home. The blockage is downstream of both fixtures, often roots or a buildup in the lateral, and is usually cleared from the outdoor cleanout.

Backups that come back every few months

Common under older homes with clay laterals and mature street or yard trees. Roots enter through joints, get cut back, then regrow. A camera inspection shows whether cleaning on a schedule or a pipe repair makes more sense.

Slow drains in a newer Anaheim Hills home

Plastic pipe resists roots and scale, so the usual causes are wipes, hair, grease or a sag in the line. A camera can tell a simple clog from a pipe that has settled and holds water.

What's under an Anaheim house

West and central Anaheim filled in with 1950s and 1960s tracts. The Colony district near downtown holds the city's oldest homes, and Anaheim Hills came later. Your home's age is the first clue: older houses tend to have cast-iron drains and clay or cast-iron laterals, and those pipes scale, crack and let roots in at the joints.

Water in the city comes from Anaheim Public Utilities and, like much of North Orange County, is hard: local groundwater blended with imported water. Mineral scale narrows old drain pipe over time and gives grease something to grip. Where the homeowner's sewer lateral ends and the city's main begins is set by the city, so check with the City of Anaheim before assuming who is responsible for a section of pipe.

  • Ask any contractor for a CSLB license number and check it at cslb.ca.gov before work starts.
  • Confirm the company actually serves your Anaheim ZIP code.
  • If roots are found, ask whether they enter at a joint, a crack or a break, and how far from the house.
  • For restaurants and other businesses, ask the city about grease interceptor and discharge rules before scheduling work.
  • Ask for the camera recording or still images if a repair is recommended.

Straight answers on drains

How can I tell a sink clog from a main sewer line clog?

If only one fixture is slow, the clog is usually in that fixture's trap or branch line. If several drains slow at once, the lowest drains back up first, or the tub fills when a toilet flushes, the main line is the likely cause.

Is snaking or hydro jetting better?

They do different jobs. A cable opens a passage through most clogs and is gentle on fragile pipe. Hydro jetting scours grease, scale and fine roots off the pipe walls, which can slow repeat clogs, but it should only be used after the pipe's condition is known, often by camera.

Do I need a camera inspection for a clogged drain?

Not for a simple sink or tub clog. A camera is worth asking about for main line backups, clogs that return, roots, or before buying an older Anaheim home, because it shows the cause and the pipe's condition.

Are chemical drain cleaners safe to use?

They are best avoided. Caustic products seldom clear a main line, can harm old metal pipe and fixtures, and create a burn hazard for anyone who later opens the drain. If you have used one, tell the plumber before they start.

Where is my sewer cleanout?

Many homes have a capped pipe outside near the foundation or close to where the sewer line leaves the house, sometimes in a planter or under a small lid. Some older homes have none that is easy to reach. Do not open it if the line is backed up.

Why do tree roots keep coming back?

Cutting roots removes what is inside the pipe, not the opening they came through. Roots return through the same joint or crack. A camera can show whether a repair or lining would solve it.

Who is responsible for the sewer line between my house and the street?

Generally the property owner is responsible for the private lateral, but where that responsibility ends is set by the city. Check with the City of Anaheim for your address.
