Why a written log helps
Sewer laterals rarely fail all at once. Roots thicken, a sag collects paper, a crack lets soil in, and the drains give small warnings for weeks. Memory blurs those warnings together. A dated log shows whether trouble follows laundry day, heavy rain, guests staying over or nothing at all.
Keep the sheet near the bathroom you use most, or in a kitchen drawer. When you finally call a licensed plumber, read from the log or share a photo of it. It also helps later if you compare a repair proposal against how long the problem has been going on.
Log sheet (print and fill in)
| Date and time | Fixture | What happened | Water use just before | Cleared how? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Words to use in the 'what happened' column
- Slow
- Drains, but takes noticeably longer than usual.
- Gurgle
- Bubbling sound from a toilet, tub or floor drain when another fixture is used.
- Rise
- Water comes up in a tub, shower or floor drain instead of going down.
- Odor
- A sewer smell indoors or at the outdoor cleanout.
- Backup
- Wastewater or sewage comes out of a fixture onto the floor or into a tub.
Also note once, at the top of the sheet
- Approximate age of the house and whether it sits on a slab or raised floor
- Where the outdoor cleanout is, if you know
- Large trees or hedges between the house and the street
- Dates of any past clearing, camera inspection or repair
- Number of people living in the house
When the log says call now
- IfAny entry says 'Backup' with sewageThenStop using water and call a licensed plumber; keep people away from the sewage.
- IfThree or more 'Slow' or 'Gurgle' entries on different fixtures within two weeksThenThe main line is likely involved. Arrange clearing and a camera inspection.
- IfEntries cluster after laundry or heavy water useThenMention it: it often points to a restriction in the lateral.
- IfOnly one fixture ever appearsThenIt may be a branch clog rather than the lateral.
Common questions
How long should I keep the log?
Until the cause is found and fixed, then keep it with your repair paperwork. It is useful history for the house.
Is a phone note as good as paper?
Yes, as long as each entry has a date, the fixture and what happened.
Should I log single-fixture clogs too?
Yes. A plumber can quickly rule them in or out.
