Case 01
The clog that comes back every spring
A big front-yard tree, a clay lateral and a clearing every year. On camera, roots come in at five joints. Clearing buys a few months. Lining or replacing the run takes away the joints the roots use.
Sewer laterals · Whittier, CA
Every drain in your house empties into one buried pipe. We run a camera through it first, show you the footage with distances, and then talk about spot repair, lining or replacement.

014 ft · Symptoms
One slow sink is usually its own clog. Two or more of these together usually mean the lateral.
Right now
Roots, cracks and sags all look the same from inside the house. The camera tells them apart.
027 ft · The lateral
Your toilets, tubs, sinks and washer all drain into the sewer lateral, a single pipe that runs under the front yard or driveway to the city main. When it cracks, sags or fills with roots, the whole house slows down at once, and wastewater backs up into the lowest tub or shower.
A lot of Whittier was built between the 1950s and 1970s. Laterals from those decades are usually vitrified clay or cast iron. Roots find the clay joints. Cast iron rusts and scales from the inside until it splits. Blocks with big street trees see roots more than anywhere else.
The fix might be one short section, a liner pulled through the old pipe, a new pipe burst through, or a trench. Footage decides which, so that is where we start.
041 ft · Methods
Four ways to fix a lateral. The footage, the slope and whatever sits on top of the pipe narrow it down. We list no prices here. Ask for each option in writing.
| Method | What happens | Usually fits when | Ask the plumber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spot repair | Clear the line, dig at one defect and replace a short section. | The camera finds one break or one root entry and the rest of the run looks sound. | How much of the remaining pipe looks good on the footage? |
| Pipe lining | A resin-soaked tube is pulled into the old pipe and cured in place, forming a new pipe inside it. | The pipe is cracked or rooted but still round, with no long sags or collapses. | How do you seal the ends at the house and at the main? |
| Pipe bursting | A bursting head splits the old pipe while new pipe, often HDPE, follows it in. | The whole line needs replacing and runs fairly straight between two pits. | Where do the pits go, and have nearby utilities been located? |
| Open trench | Dig along the route, remove the old pipe and lay new pipe at the correct slope. | A section has collapsed, a long belly holds water, or the slope needs fixing. | What gets restored afterward, and is it in the written price? |
056 ft · The work
The order rarely changes. Whoever does the work should walk you through each step and put the scope and price in writing before anyone digs.
A cable machine or a hydro jetter clears a path so the camera can pass. Clearing restores flow but does not fix a broken pipe.
A waterproof camera travels from the cleanout to the main and records material, joints, roots, cracks, sags and offsets. A locator marks each problem on the ground with an approximate depth.
Each defect has a distance on screen. Those distances tell you whether one short repair will do or whether the whole run is tired. Keep a copy of the video.
Spot repair, lining, pipe bursting or open trench. Lateral work and anything in the sidewalk or street usually needs a permit, so check requirements with the City of Whittier.
The crew opens access pits or a trench, installs the new pipe or liner, reconnects at the house and the main, and runs water to confirm flow.
A second recording shows the finished line. File it with the permit sign-off and the written scope. A future buyer will ask for it.

A big front-yard tree, a clay lateral and a clearing every year. On camera, roots come in at five joints. Clearing buys a few months. Lining or replacing the run takes away the joints the roots use.
Case 02
The buyer's inspector asks for a sewer camera on an older house. The footage shows a cracked section and a belly near the sidewalk. Both sides negotiate from the written findings instead of a guess.
Case 03
In a slab-on-grade tract home, a drain under the bathroom has scaled and cracked. The options are cutting the slab, tunneling from outside or lining from inside. Each disturbs something different.
Case 04
The line runs diagonally under concrete to the street. If the pipe still holds its shape, a trenchless method can leave the driveway alone.

Whittier runs from older homes near Uptown to postwar tract blocks and hillside lots. Most laterals from those years are clay or cast iron, and many sit under mature trees, driveways or deep front setbacks. That decides which repairs are practical before anyone looks at a price.
Who owns which part of the line differs from city to city, and work in the sidewalk or street usually needs a permit. Before any digging, confirm with the City of Whittier who is responsible for each section, which permits apply and whether an inspection happens before backfill.
