What a belly is
Gravity moves everything through a sewer lateral, so the pipe has to fall steadily from the house to the main. A belly is a stretch where the pipe has dropped below that line. Water settles in the low point, solids drop out of it, and over time the dip becomes a trap that slows the whole system.
Bellies form when the soil beneath the pipe settles or washes away, when the original bedding was poor, or when nearby digging, heavy vehicles or tree roots disturb the ground. On camera, a belly shows up as the lens dipping into standing water for a few feet before emerging again.
Signs of a sagging line
- Clogs that return even after thorough clearing
- Paper and debris found repeatedly at about the same distance
- A camera that goes underwater partway down the line
- A sunken strip of yard or driveway above the line
- Slow drainage that worsens after heavy water use
Does the belly need repair?
Not every low spot requires digging. The depth, length and effect on flow matter.
- IfThe camera shows a shallow dip with only a little standing water and no repeated clogsThenIt may be monitored. Ask for footage to compare at a later inspection.
- IfThe dip holds water across much of the pipe diameter and debris collects thereThenRepair is usually recommended, since clearing will not fix the slope.
- IfThe belly sits next to cracks, offsets or rootsThenA repair that addresses all of those at once is often discussed.
- IfMost of the line has poor slopeThenFull replacement with corrected grade is likely the only lasting fix.
Repair options for a belly
Dig and regrade
- Excavate the low section
- Re-bed and re-lay pipe at correct slope
- Fixes the cause directly
- Disturbs the surface above
Trenchless methods
- Lining follows the existing pipe, dip included
- Pipe bursting tends to follow the old path too
- Less surface disturbance
- Usually do not correct the slope
Questions to ask
- How long is the belly, and how deep is the standing water?
- What likely caused the settling here?
- Would lining just preserve the dip?
- What surface sits above the belly, and how will it be restored?
Common questions
Can hydro jetting fix a belly?
Jetting can clean out the debris that collects in a belly, but it does not change the pipe's slope, so the problem tends to return.
Are small bellies normal?
Minor dips are found in many older lines. Whether one needs repair depends on how much water it holds and whether it causes clogs.
Will lining fix a sag?
Lining follows the existing pipe, so it usually keeps the sag. It may still be used if the dip is minor and other defects are the main concern.
