Compare the same job

Sewer quotes are hard to compare because each contractor describes the work in their own way. One lists restoration as a separate line, another folds it into the total, a third leaves it out. This worksheet forces every quote into the same rows.

Fill one column per contractor. Where a quote is silent on a row, write 'not stated' and ask about it. Silence on restoration, permits or the final camera pass is the most common reason a lower total later becomes a higher bill.

Reading the grid

  • IfMethods differ (spot repair vs. full lining)ThenAsk each contractor what the other's method would leave untreated on the footage.
  • IfLengths differ for the same methodThenCheck against your camera worksheet; one may be measuring to the property line, another to the main.
  • IfOne quote omits restorationThenAsk for it in writing before comparing totals.
  • IfWarranty terms are vagueThenAsk what is covered, for how long and what voids it, in writing.

Red flags

  • No license number on the quote
  • Pressure to sign the same day without footage
  • A method recommended without showing you the defects
  • No mention of permits for replacement or street work
  • A total with no breakdown at all

Follow-up questions to send each contractor

  1. Which line items could change once the ground is open?
  2. Who on your crew will do the work, and are any subcontractors involved?
  3. What schedule do you expect, and how long will drains be out of use?

Common questions

How many quotes should I get?

Two or three is common for a replacement. Share the same footage with each so they bid on the same facts.

Can I give one contractor's quote to another?

You can share the footage and scope. Many homeowners keep prices private and compare scopes.

What if every quote recommends something different?

Ask each to explain against the footage. A second camera inspection can help settle it.
