Keep the card simple and visible. Laminate it or slip it into a plastic sleeve if the heater is in a garage. Walk through it with everyone in the home once, especially the rule that a gas smell means leaving before calling. After any emergency, write down what happened in your symptom log so the plumber can see the full picture.
Common questions
Should I turn off the gas at the meter myself?
In a gas emergency, leave and let SoCalGas or responders handle the meter. If gas service is turned off at the meter, only SoCalGas should restore it.
Is a small drip an emergency?
A slow drip from a fitting usually isn't, but water from the tank base or steady relief valve discharge is a reason to shut down and call.
Where should I post the card?
On the wall beside the heater and, if possible, a second copy near the main water shutoff or inside a kitchen cabinet.
