Why quotes are hard to compare

One contractor quotes a liner from the cleanout to the property line. Another quotes pipe bursting all the way to the city main. A third quotes a spot repair at one located defect. All three are called sewer repair, and none of them is the same work.

Before you look at the bottom line, fill in the rows below for each quote. Any blank cell is a question to ask that contractor.

Before you choose

  • Each quote is based on a camera inspection, not a guess.
  • I understand why the methods differ, if they do.
  • I have checked each license at cslb.ca.gov.
  • I know what restoration is and is not included.
  • I have asked the City of Fullerton whether a permit applies.

Lower price versus fuller scope

A lower quote may

  • Cover a shorter length of line
  • Leave out restoration or permit work
  • Fix one defect and leave others
  • Assume nothing extra will be found

A higher quote may

  • Run all the way to the city main
  • Include surface restoration
  • Correct several defects at once
  • Include before and after footage

Follow-up questions for any blank row

  1. Can you show me on the video what this quote fixes?
  2. Why did you choose this method over the alternatives?
  3. If you find more damage after starting, how will we agree on the change?
  4. What exactly will the yard, driveway or floor look like when you leave?

Common questions

How many quotes should I get?

For a large repair, two or three is common. For an emergency clearing, one written price before work starts is usually the practical choice.

Is it fair to share one quote with another contractor?

You can share the camera findings so everyone quotes the same problem. Whether to share prices is up to you.

What if two quotes disagree on the problem?

Ask each to show you the defect on video. If they still disagree, a third inspection may settle it.
