The pipe you cannot see

Many homes for sale in Fullerton date from the postwar building decades, with cast-iron drains under the slab and clay or cast-iron laterals running to the street. Those pipes can be in fine shape or close to the end of their life, and nothing on a walk-through tells you which.

A sewer camera inspection during the inspection period gives you the same information a homeowner would get after a stoppage, before the house is yours.

Ask the seller or listing agent

  • Has the main sewer line ever backed up?
  • Has it been cleared, and how often?
  • Has any part of the lateral been repaired, lined or replaced?
  • Are there camera videos, invoices or permit records?
  • Where is the outdoor cleanout?

Arrange a camera inspection

  1. Schedule early

Book it within your inspection period so there is time to act on the results.

  2. Confirm access

Make sure the inspector can reach a cleanout, or knows a toilet may need to be pulled.

  3. Ask for the full length

Ask whether the camera will reach the city main or stop at the property line.

  4. Get the video

Ask for the full recording and a written summary with distances.

What findings might mean for you

Walk the property for clues

  • Large trees between the house and street, especially near the cleanout.
  • Sunken spots in the lawn along the likely sewer path.
  • Patched concrete in the driveway or walkway.
  • A newer cleanout or pipe material, suggesting past repair work.
  • Water stains near the lowest shower or floor drain.

Common questions

Is a sewer camera inspection part of a normal home inspection?

Usually not. It is often arranged separately with a plumber or a specialist.

Does a newer-looking cleanout mean the line was replaced?

Not necessarily. It may mean only the cleanout was added. The camera shows the actual pipe.

What if the seller has a recent video?

Watch it and check the date and the distance reached. Some buyers still get their own inspection.
