Why trenchless comes up
Many Fullerton laterals run under lawns, mature landscaping, driveways and sometimes patios. Digging a trench along the whole line means restoring all of that afterward. Trenchless methods aim to do the pipe work through one or two small openings, typically at a cleanout and near the connection to the street.
Not every line is a candidate. The condition of the old pipe, its path, any sags and the number of connections all affect what is possible, which is why a camera inspection comes first.
The two main methods
Cured-in-place lining
- A resin-soaked liner is pulled or inverted into the old pipe
- It is inflated and cured to form a new pipe inside
- Seals cracks and root-prone joints
- Slightly reduces the inside diameter
- Needs a host pipe that still holds its shape
Pipe bursting
- A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe
- It fractures the old pipe outward
- A new pipe is pulled in behind it
- Can keep or increase diameter
- Needs entry and exit pits; nearby utilities matter
Typical sequence
Inspect and measure
A camera inspection confirms the path, length and condition of the old line.
Clean the line
Roots and buildup are removed so a liner bonds or a bursting head can pass.
Open access
Small pits or existing cleanouts give access at each end.
Install
The liner is placed and cured, or the new pipe is pulled through.
Reconnect and re-inspect
Connections are restored and the finished line is filmed so you can see the result.
Get these in writing
- Which method, and the length of line it covers.
- Where access pits will be dug and how they will be restored.
- Whether the work runs to the city main or stops at the property line.
- Whether a City of Fullerton permit and inspection are needed and who arranges them.
- The CSLB license number of the contractor doing the work.
- Whether you will receive the before and after camera footage.
Where trenchless may not save much
If the lateral is short and runs under open ground, the access pits for trenchless work may not be much smaller than a trench would be. In that case, ask for both options so you can compare the scope, disruption and restoration side by side.
Common questions
Is a lined pipe as good as a new one?
A properly installed liner forms a continuous pipe that seals joints and cracks. Ask about the liner material and what the installer expects for its service life.
Can roots get through a liner?
A continuous liner removes the joints roots normally enter. The ends and reconnections are the places to check on the final inspection.
Does trenchless work need a permit?
Sewer lateral replacement commonly does. Check with the City of Fullerton for your address and project.
