Why gas work deserves extra care
A drain that is done poorly backs up; a gas line done poorly can leak into a wall or attic where nobody notices. That is why the contractor's license, the permit, the material choice and the pressure test matter more here than on most home projects.
Use this checklist while you collect estimates. If a contractor cannot or will not answer a question on it, that tells you something too.
Verify the contractor
- Got the CSLB license number in writing
- Looked it up at cslb.ca.gov and confirmed it is active
- Confirmed the license classification covers plumbing or gas work
- Asked whether employees or subcontractors will do the work
- Asked whether the crew is trained on the specific pipe products to be used, such as CSST
- Confirmed the company serves your Villa Park address
Get these in the written estimate
- A clear description of the work and the appliances involved
- Pipe material for each part of the run, including any buried section
- Pipe size, and confirmation the load calculation includes all appliances
- Who pulls the permit and schedules inspections
- A pressure test before gas is restored
- Who restores service if the meter is shut off
- Patching, trench backfill and surface restoration, or a note that they are excluded
- Total price and payment schedule
Green flags and red flags
Reassuring
- Offers license number before you ask
- Explains the permit and inspection plan
- Describes how the line will be tested
- Puts everything in writing
Worth questioning
- Suggests skipping the permit to save time
- Will not say what pipe material will be used
- No mention of a pressure test
- Large cash payment before any work
Questions to ask on the call or visit
- What caused the problem, or what does the new line need to supply?
- Will the existing line and meter handle the added load?
- How will you protect walls, floors and landscaping?
- How long will the gas be off, and which appliances will be affected?
- What happens if the pressure test fails?
Common questions
Is a handyman allowed to do gas line work?
Gas piping work generally requires an appropriately licensed contractor and often a permit. Check the license at cslb.ca.gov before hiring.
How many estimates should I get?
Two or three written estimates for the same scope make comparison easier. Use the estimate comparison worksheet on this site.
Should the estimate include the permit?
It should say who pulls it and whether its cost is included. Check current requirements with the City of Villa Park.
