What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the contractor's CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup shows whether the license is active and which classifications it covers.

Will a plumber pressure test the line before turning gas back on?

Ask. A written estimate for gas work should say that the repaired or new piping will be pressure tested, and whether a city inspection is part of the job.

Is carbon monoxide the same as a gas leak?

No. Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas from incomplete burning, not the natural gas itself. A CO alarm sounding is its own emergency: get outside and call 911. Gas appliances should be checked afterward.

Should I buy the appliance before talking to a plumber?

It helps to talk first. The plumber can confirm whether the existing line and meter can supply the new appliance, or whether a larger line is needed, before you commit.

Who digs the trench for a buried gas line?

Ask the plumber whether trenching is included. Before any digging, the underground utilities should be marked by calling 811 so no other buried lines are hit.

How do I know the price is fair?

Get the scope and price in writing before work starts, including pipe material, permit, pressure test and patching. Comparing two written estimates for the same scope is the most reliable check.
