The blocks around the center

The Town Center is the city's main shopping area, but the streets around it are residential, with single-family homes much like the rest of Villa Park. Housing here mostly dates from the 1960s and 1970s, with plenty of remodels.

Being close to the center of town does not change who handles your utilities, but it is a useful reference point. City Hall is nearby on Santiago Boulevard, and the city is where permit questions for gas work go.

Common gas questions and where they lead

  • IfYou smell gas at homeThenLeave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.
  • IfYou smell gas outdoors near a street or businessThenMove away and call 911 or SoCalGas; do not assume someone else reported it.
  • IfYou want a gas range in a remodeled kitchenThenGet a plumber to check sizing and route, and confirm the permit with the city.
  • IfYour meter area is crowded by plants or storageThenClear access so the valve can be reached quickly.

Earthquake readiness for gas

  • Tank water heater strapped as California requires
  • A wrench or shutoff tool kept near the meter
  • Everyone in the household knows the meter stays off until SoCalGas restores it
  • Appliance connectors in good condition, not old bare brass
  • Ask the city whether an automatic seismic shutoff valve applies to your home

Street trees and laterals

Mature street and yard trees are common around the center. In homes with older clay or cast-iron sewer laterals, roots can enter at the joints. If drains slow down across the house, a sewer camera inspection can show whether roots are the cause. Ask the City of Villa Park where your responsibility for the lateral ends.
