Why totals mislead
A lower total may leave out the camera inspection, restoration of a dug-up lawn, or the permit. A higher total may include a follow-up camera run and written footage. Until each quote is broken into the same pieces, you are not comparing like with like.
We do not publish or judge prices here. The worksheet only helps you see the differences in scope.

Make each quote complete
- Ask every contractor the same questions so the answers line up
- Request written scope, not just a total
- Clarify vague phrases like "as needed" or "if required"
- Confirm whether follow-up visits are included
- Check each license at cslb.ca.gov
Two ways the same job can be quoted
Narrow quote
- Clears the line only
- No camera run
- No written findings
- Lower upfront scope
Broader quote
- Clears the line
- Camera inspection with footage
- Written summary of defects
- Repair options listed separately
Follow-up questions
- Why is your method different from the other quote?
- What would make the price change once work starts?
- Can you show me on the footage why this repair is needed?
Common questions
How many quotes should I get?
For routine clearing, one licensed plumber is usually fine. For major repair, two or three written quotes are reasonable.
Can I share one company's footage with another?
If you have the recording, yes; it helps others quote accurately.
What if the quotes recommend different fixes?
Ask each to explain the defect they are fixing. Differences often come from different assumptions about the pipe's condition.
