Why drains gurgle

Drain lines need air as well as water. Vent pipes, which usually rise through the roof, let air into the system so water can flow smoothly and so the water seal in each trap stays in place. When water pushes past a partial clog, or when the vent cannot supply air, the system pulls air through the nearest trap instead, and you hear it bubble.

Occasional, faint gurgling after a large volume of water can be normal. Persistent gurgling, especially paired with slow drains or sewer odor, is worth investigating.

Narrowing it down

  1. Note which fixtures gurgle. One fixture suggests a local trap or branch issue; several suggest the main or a shared vent.
  2. Check drain speed.Fill and release a sink. Slow draining points to a clog.
  3. Watch the toilet. If its bowl level drops after another fixture drains, air or siphoning is involved.
  4. Consider recent work.A recent remodel or new fixture may have been installed without proper venting.

Likely next steps

  • IfGurgling with slow drains throughout the houseTreat it as a partial main-line clog and have the line cleared.
  • IfGurgling at one fixture that drains slowlyClear that trap or branch.
  • IfGurgling with normal drain speedAsk a plumber to check the vent.
  • IfGurgling after a remodelAsk whether the new fixture is vented correctly; check permit history with the city.

Questions to ask a plumber

  1. Is this a drain blockage, a vent blockage or both?
  2. How will you check the vent without risking roof damage?
  3. Is the venting in my home adequate for the fixtures it serves?
  4. If a vent change is needed, does it require a permit?

Common questions

Is gurgling dangerous?

The sound itself is not, but it can come with sewer gas if trap seals are pulled dry. If odors appear, have it checked.

Can a blocked vent cause slow drains?

Yes, a badly blocked vent can slow drainage, though usually less than a clog does.

What is an air admittance valve?

A one-way valve that lets air into a drain line where a traditional vent is hard to run. Whether one is allowed in a given spot is a code question for the plumber and the city.
