What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov to see the license status and classification.
Someone wants to start breaking concrete before finding the leak. Is that normal?
It is reasonable to ask how the leak was located and how confident they are in the spot before any concrete is opened.
I was told I need a full repipe after one leak. Should I get another opinion?
A repipe can make sense when lines are worn throughout, but it is fair to ask why, to see the evidence, and to compare it with a spot repair or reroute.
Who patches the floor afterward?
Plumbers commonly patch the concrete, but finished flooring such as tile or wood is often separate. Ask what is included in writing.
How do I know the repair worked?
Ask for a pressure test after the repair, then repeat the meter test yourself with all water off. The indicator should stay still.
What should be in the written estimate?
What was found and where, the repair method, what is included and excluded, permits if required, and the contractor's CSLB license number.
