Why scope comes first
A low number on one estimate and a higher one on another often reflect different jobs: one might jet only the main lateral with no camera, the other might inspect before and after and include the kitchen branch. Until you line the details up, the numbers do not tell you much.
This sheet does not suggest what anything should cost. It helps you ask each contractor the same questions and see the gaps.

How to fill it in
- Ask the same questions.Use the rows above as your script so every contractor answers the same things.
- Check each license.Look up every license number at cslb.ca.gov and note whether it is active.
- Mark gaps.Where a contractor did not address an item, write 'not stated' and ask.
- Compare price last.Only once the scopes match, compare the totals.
Signs of a clear estimate versus a vague one
Clear
- Names the lines and access point
- States whether camera work is included
- Explains what happens if damage is found
- Shows the license number
Vague
- Says only 'drain cleaning'
- Silent on camera work and footage
- No mention of changes in scope
- No license number on paper
Common questions
How many quotes should I get?
For routine jetting, one or two well-defined estimates is often enough. For a large repair, more opinions are reasonable.
Is the cheapest quote a bad sign?
Not by itself. It may cover less work, or the contractor may price lower. Compare scope before drawing conclusions.
Should I sign an estimate on the spot?
For an active backup you may need the line cleared quickly. For repairs beyond clearing, take time to review.
