The situation

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

A family in a single-story slab-on-grade home from the 1960s finds the kitchen sink backing up whenever the dishwasher runs. It has been cleared with a cable twice in the past year. Each time it works for a few months, then slows again.

  1. The homeowner starts a symptom log and notices problems cluster after large dinners and dishwasher loads.
  2. Other drains in the house are working normally.
  3. On the next call, they ask for a camera inspection instead of another quick clearing.

The pattern points to the kitchen branch line rather than the main sewer lateral.

What the camera showed

In this example, the plumber reaches the kitchen line through a cleanout on an outside wall. The footage shows a thick grease coating along a long horizontal run under the slab, with a narrow channel through the middle where the cable had passed. The pipe itself looks intact.

That explains the cycle: the cable restored flow each time, but most of the grease stayed on the walls and caught food particles until the line closed again.

What was done

  1. Jetting. The plumber jets the branch line with a nozzle suited to its size, working slowly to scour the walls.
  2. Second camera pass.Footage confirms most of the grease is gone and the pipe is sound.
  3. Habit changes. The family begins collecting cooking fat for the trash and using a sink strainer.
  4. Records. The homeowner saves both videos and notes the date in a records log.

Before and after in this example

Before

  • Cabled twice in a year
  • No footage
  • Cause unknown
  • Grease going down the sink

After

  • Pipe walls cleaned
  • Footage on file
  • Cause identified
  • Grease kept out of the drain

Lessons you can apply

  1. Has the same drain clogged more than once? Ask for a camera look.
  2. Did the last clearing remove buildup, or only open a path?
  3. What household habits might be feeding the problem?

Common questions

Is this a real Fullerton job?

No. It is an invented example to illustrate a common pattern.

Would jetting always solve this?

Not always. If the camera had shown a sag or damaged pipe, the answer could have been a repair instead.

How long would the line stay clear?

That depends on the pipe and household habits. Watching for early slowdowns is the best guide.
