Why jetting quotes vary so much

Two contractors can look at the same Fullerton house and give very different prices for jetting, and both can be honest. One may include a camera inspection before and after; the other may not. One may plan to jet only the main lateral; the other may include branch lines. Quotes are only comparable when the scope is the same.

Jetting also uses more equipment than a cable: a high-pressure pump, a water supply, hoses and nozzles, and often a camera. The time involved depends heavily on access and what is in the pipe.

Factors that commonly affect the price

FactorWhy it matters
AccessA usable cleanout is faster than pulling a toilet or working from a roof vent.
Line lengthLonger laterals and deep-set homes take more hose and time.
What is in the lineLight grease clears faster than heavy roots or thick scale.
Pipe conditionFragile pipe calls for slower, staged work at lower pressure.
Camera inspectionBefore-and-after footage adds time but shows what was done.
Number of linesJetting the main plus kitchen and other branches is more work than one line.
TimingAfter-hours or urgent visits are often priced differently. Ask in advance.
Follow-up repairIf the camera finds damage, repair is a separate scope and price.

What a clear written estimate should state

  • Which lines will be jetted and from which access point.
  • Whether a camera inspection is included before, after or both.
  • Whether you receive a copy of the footage.
  • How the price changes if more time or another access point is needed.
  • What happens to the price if the camera finds damage and work stops.
  • The contractor's CSLB license number, so you can check it at cslb.ca.gov.

Comparing two quotes

Lower-looking quote

  • May exclude the camera inspection
  • May cover only the main lateral
  • May not mention footage
  • Extra charges may apply if conditions change

Higher-looking quote

  • May include before-and-after camera work
  • May include branch lines
  • May spell out what happens if damage is found
  • May be closer to the real final cost

Questions to ask about price

  1. Is this a flat price or based on time?
  2. What exactly is included, and what would cost extra?
  3. If you cannot clear the line, what do I pay?
  4. Will the price be in writing before you start?

Common questions

Why doesn't this site list jetting prices?

Prices depend on access, line length, what is in the pipe and what is included, so a fair number needs details about your line. This is a preview site and our request form is not yet connected, so ask any contractor for a written estimate that spells out the scope.

Is a camera inspection worth paying for?

For a main sewer line, footage shows what is in the pipe, whether jetting is safe and whether it worked. It also gives you a record for future decisions.

Will insurance pay for jetting?

Policies vary, and routine maintenance is often treated differently from sudden damage. Read your policy or ask your insurer before work begins.
