Compare the job, not the number
The lowest total is only the best deal if it buys the same work. One contractor may quote cabling the main from the cleanout; another may include a camera inspection and a jetting pass; a third may be pricing a spot repair with restoration of the lawn. Until the scopes line up, the totals cannot be compared.
Fill in one column per estimate. Where an estimate is silent on a line, write unclear and ask the contractor before deciding. The gaps are often where surprise charges come from.

Before you fill it in
- Make sure every estimate is in writing, not a verbal number
- Give every contractor the same information and the same camera footage
- Ask each one to describe the problem in their own words
- Confirm each estimate covers the same section of pipe
- Note whether the estimate expires and when
When estimates disagree on the method
- IfOne recommends cleaning only, another a repairThenAsk each to point to the footage that supports their view.
- IfOne recommends lining, another excavationThenAsk about the pipe's shape and slope; sags and collapses often rule out lining.
- IfTotals differ widely for the same scopeThenLook for missing lines such as permits, restoration or haul-away.
- IfOne estimate is vagueThenAsk for a revised written scope before comparing further.
Questions that clear up differences
- What exactly is excluded from this estimate?
- What would cause the price to change once work starts?
- How long will the house be without drainage?
- Who restores the yard, driveway or floor, and to what standard?
Common questions
How many estimates should I get?
For routine drain cleaning, one clear estimate is often enough. For a sewer repair or replacement, two or three written estimates are common.
Should I share one contractor's footage with another?
It is your footage of your pipe. Sharing it helps others quote the same problem, though they may want to inspect themselves.
Is the cheapest estimate a red flag?
Not necessarily. It is a reason to check that the scope matches the others.
