Two ways to clear a line
A drain snake, or cable machine, spins a coiled steel cable down the pipe. A cutting or auger head on the end bores through the blockage, chops roots and hooks debris. It is fast, works through most fixtures and cleanouts, and has been the standard tool for generations.
Hydro jetting sends water at very high pressure through a hose with a nozzle that has rear-facing jets. The jets pull the hose forward and blast the inside of the pipe wall, washing grease, sludge, scale and fine roots downstream. It cleans more of the pipe's diameter, but it needs good access and a pipe that can take the pressure.
Side by side
| Cable snaking | Hydro jetting | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Rotating cable with a cutting head | High-pressure water jets |
| Best at | Breaking through solid blockages and roots | Removing grease, sludge and buildup from the pipe walls |
| Leaves behind | Often a coating on the pipe walls | A cleaner pipe interior |
| Access needed | Fixture, trap arm or cleanout | Usually a cleanout of suitable size |
| Pipe condition | Tolerates most pipe | Needs pipe sound enough for the pressure |
| Typical use | First response to most clogs | Recurring grease lines, heavy buildup, pre-lining cleaning |
Which one fits your clog?
- IfA single toilet or sink is blocked by a solid object or a hair matThenA hand auger or small cable machine is usually all it takes.
- IfThe kitchen line clogs every few months with greaseThenAsk whether jetting would clear the buildup more completely than another cable pass.
- IfThe main line is full of rootsThenA root-cutting cable often goes first; jetting may follow to flush the cuttings.
- IfThe pipe is old, cracked or partly collapsedThenGet a camera inspection before jetting; pressure can make a weak pipe worse.
Factors that change the recommendation
- Pipe material: plastic, cast iron or clay
- Pipe age and any known cracks, offsets or sags
- Where access is: a proper cleanout, a toilet or only a roof vent
- Whether the problem is a solid blockage or wall buildup
- How often the line has clogged before
- Whether repair or lining is planned, which often needs a clean pipe first
Questions before either method
- What do you think the clog is, and where is it?
- Why this method for this pipe?
- Is there a risk to the pipe, and what happens if it is damaged?
- Will you test the flow when you finish?
- How is the work priced, and can I have that in writing before you start?
Common questions
Is hydro jetting safe for old Fullerton pipes?
It depends on their condition. Sound cast iron and clay can often be jetted; cracked, offset or badly corroded pipe may not handle it. A camera inspection first is a reasonable request.
Does jetting stop roots from coming back?
No. It clears roots and debris, but the joint the roots came through stays open. Only a repair seals it.
Why did the plumber snake the line twice?
Plumbers sometimes use a smaller head first to open the line, then a larger one to clear closer to the full diameter of the pipe.
