What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the contractor's CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup shows whether the license is active and what classification it covers.

A plumber says I need a new sewer line. How do I know that is true?

Ask to see the camera footage, with the location and depth of the problem marked. For a large repair, it is reasonable to get a second opinion and a written estimate from another licensed contractor.

Is a sewer smell the same as a gas leak?

No, but they can be confused. Sewer gas often comes from a dry floor drain or a failed seal. If you smell rotten eggs and think it may be natural gas, leave the house and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside before anything else.

Who pays if I rent?

That depends on your lease and the cause of the clog. Tell your landlord or property manager right away, in writing if you can, before arranging any work yourself.

Will drain cleaning damage old pipes?

Any method carries some risk on fragile or badly corroded pipe. Ask the plumber which tool they plan to use, why, and what they would do if they find the pipe is broken.

Do I need a permit for drain cleaning?

Clearing a clog generally does not involve a permit, but sewer line repair or replacement may. Check with the City of Fullerton and ask your contractor who pulls any permit required.
