Burst pipe or major leak

  1. Shut off the main

Close the main water shutoff. If it will not close, contact the city's water utility about the meter.

  2. Protect people from electricity

Keep people away from water near outlets, panels or appliances.

  3. Open a low faucet

Draining remaining water from the lines can reduce flow from the break.

  4. Call a licensed plumber

Describe where the leak is and what material the pipe appears to be.

Sewage backup

  1. Stop using water

Tell everyone in the building not to flush, shower or run appliances.

  2. Keep people and pets away

Close off the area; do not touch sewage without gloves and eye protection.

  3. Do not add chemicals

Drain openers rarely clear a main line and can harm whoever opens it.

  4. Get the line cleared and inspected

Ask for a camera inspection once the line flows again.

Keep near the card

  • Flashlight with working batteries
  • Valve key or adjustable wrench for the main if needed
  • Gloves and eye protection
  • Towels and a bucket
  • A copy of your shutoff map

Review once a year

  1. Does everyone know where the card and main shutoff are?
  2. Does the main valve still close?
  3. Is the plumber's license still active?
  4. Have any valves or cleanouts changed after recent work?

Common questions

Can I write this site's number on my card?

This is a preview site for Downtown Fullerton Plumbing, and the number shown is a temporary placeholder. For your card, write down a licensed plumber you have checked at cslb.ca.gov.

Where should I keep the card?

Somewhere obvious, such as inside a kitchen cabinet door or near the electrical panel, with a photo on your phone.

Should tenants get a copy?

Yes. Tenants in an older building should know where the shutoffs are and who to contact.
