Why older lines back up repeatedly

A main line that clogs every few months is telling you the pipe itself is catching waste. In older buildings the usual culprits are roots growing into clay or cast-iron joints, heavy scale inside cast iron, a sag where water and solids settle, or a joint that has shifted so a lip catches paper.

Clearing the line removes the blockage but leaves the cause in place. Each clearing buys time, and how much time depends on what is wrong. Tracking dates and symptoms helps a plumber see the pattern.

Common causes and how they show up

CauseTypical patternWhat usually resolves it
Root intrusionBackups that return on a cycle, roots on the cableRepairing or lining the affected joints
Heavy cast-iron scaleGradual slowing, paper snaggingDescaling, then lining or replacement if the pipe is thin
Sag or bellyStanding water on the camera, clogs at the same distanceRe-grading or replacing that section
Offset or broken jointSnags at one spot, possible soil in the lineSectional repair
Grease buildupCommon in kitchens and food businessesCleaning plus changes to what goes down the drain

Breaking the cycle

  1. Clear and camera the same visit

Ask for a camera inspection right after the line is cleared, while the cause is easiest to see.

  2. Log each backup

Note the date, which fixtures backed up first and what was found, so the pattern is clear.

  3. Fix the worst spot first

If one section causes most of the trouble, repairing it can stop most backups.

  4. Plan the rest

Decide whether the remaining old pipe should be repaired now, scheduled later, or monitored.

Useful to know

First fixture to back up
Usually the lowest drain in the building, such as a shower, tub or floor drain
Best evidence
A recorded camera inspection with distances
Shared laterals
Multi-unit buildings may share a line; coordinate before work
Street side questions
Check with the City of Fullerton about responsibility past the property line

Questions to ask the plumber

  1. What did you find at the blockage, and how far from the cleanout was it?
  2. Is there one spot causing this, or several?
  3. If I keep clearing instead of repairing, how often should I expect to call?
  4. Would a cleanout in a better location make future service easier?

Common questions

Why does my shower back up when the washing machine drains?

A large volume of water reaching a partly blocked main has nowhere to go, so it rises at the lowest fixture. That pattern usually points to a main line problem rather than the shower drain.

Is a backup covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your policy. Contact your insurance company directly with questions; this guide cannot advise on coverage.

Can I use a rented drain machine on my main line?

It is possible, but old clay and cast iron can be damaged by inexperienced use, and sewage exposure is a real risk. Many owners prefer a licensed plumber for main lines.
