Who handles what
SoCalGas provides natural gas service and is responsible for the meter and the line on the street side of it. Piping from the meter into and through the building is the owner's responsibility, and work on it should be done by a licensed contractor. You can check a contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov.
In older buildings, gas piping is often a mix of original runs and later additions for new appliances. Connections may have been made with older flexible connectors, valves may be hard to reach, and some lines may be abandoned but still connected. A plumber can trace and test the system before any appliance is added or replaced.
Common issues in older gas piping
- Old flexible appliance connectors that should be replaced
- Missing or hard-to-reach shutoff valves at appliances
- Abandoned branch lines that are not properly capped
- Piping undersized for added appliances, such as a tankless water heater or range
- Corrosion on pipe that runs outdoors or through damp crawlspaces
- Appliances with poor venting, which raises carbon monoxide concerns
How gas line work usually goes
Survey the system
The plumber traces piping from the meter to each appliance and notes sizes, materials and valves.
Plan the changes
Repairs, replacements or extensions are designed around the appliances served.
Permit and inspection
Gas work commonly requires a permit; check with the City of Fullerton about what applies.
Pressure test
New or altered piping is tested to confirm it holds pressure before appliances are relit.
Relight and check
Appliances are reconnected, relit and checked for proper operation and venting.

Questions to ask a contractor
- Is your CSLB license active, and does it cover gas piping?
- Is the existing gas line sized for the appliances I have or plan to add?
- Will you replace old flexible connectors and add shutoff valves where missing?
- Will the new piping be pressure-tested and inspected?
Common questions
Can I replace a gas appliance connector myself?
Gas work carries real risk of leaks, fire and carbon monoxide. Hire a licensed contractor and have the work tested.
Who do I call if the leak seems to be at the meter?
Leave the area and call 911 or SoCalGas from a safe distance. The meter belongs to the gas utility.
Do I need an earthquake gas shutoff valve?
Requirements can vary by location and type of work. Check with the City of Fullerton and ask your contractor what applies to your building.
