Why keep a log

When a plumber asks how long the drains have been slow, most people guess. A log replaces the guess with dates, fixtures and conditions. It shows whether the trouble is one drain or the whole house, whether it follows laundry day or rain, and whether clearing the line helped or only bought a few weeks.

Print this page or copy the columns into a notebook kept near the bathroom. Each entry takes under a minute. Bring the log, or a photo of it, to any service call or camera inspection.

Events worth logging every time

  • Any drain that rises when a different fixture is used
  • Gurgling from a toilet you did not flush
  • A sewage smell indoors or along the yard
  • Water on or around the outdoor cleanout
  • Each time the main line is cleared, by whom and with what method
  • Any roots, debris or objects recovered from the line

Reading your log after a few weeks

  • IfEntries involve one fixture onlyThenLikely a local clog in that fixture's trap or branch.
  • IfSeveral fixtures, worst at the lowest drainThenPoints to the main sewer lateral.
  • IfSymptoms return a similar number of weeks after each clearingThenSuggests roots or a belly; ask for a camera inspection.
  • IfProblems spike after heavy water use like laundryThenThe line is restricted and cannot carry peak flow.
  • IfNeighbors report the same thing at the same timeThenContact the city of La Habra; the public main may be involved.

Questions the log helps you ask

  1. Does this pattern fit roots, a belly or a break?
  2. Given how often the line has been cleared, is a camera inspection the next step?
  3. Which entry point will you use, and does that match where symptoms are worst?

Common questions

How long should I keep the log before calling?

There is no waiting period. Start the log whenever symptoms appear and keep it going through any service visits.

Should I log a single slow sink?

Yes. One entry may not mean much, but it helps show later whether the problem spread.

Is a phone note as good as paper?

Yes, as long as each entry has a date and the fixture involved.
