What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the contractor's CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Check that the license is active and that the name matches the company on your quote.

What should a written quote for a water line include?

The length and route of the line, the pipe material and size, the method (trench or trenchless), connections at both ends, any new shutoff valve, permits, surface restoration and the total price.

Who restores the lawn, walkway or driveway afterward?

It varies. Some quotes include basic backfill only, while others include concrete or landscape repair. Get the restoration scope in writing so there are no surprises after the trench is closed.

Should I replace the service line and repipe the house at the same time?

If the house still has original galvanized piping, it can make sense to discuss both. Ask a plumber to inspect the interior lines and explain the options, and decide each part on its own merits.

Will my homeowner's insurance cover a broken water line?

Coverage varies by policy. Some policies or add-on endorsements address service lines, and some do not. Call your insurer, describe what happened and keep photos and invoices.

What if someone pushes me to decide on the spot?

A buried line rarely needs a same-hour decision once the water is shut off. Take time to check the license, get the scope in writing and compare at least one other quote.
