Why washer hoses fail without warning
The two hoses behind a washing machine are pressurized around the clock unless someone closes the valves after every load. Rubber dries out and cracks, the crimped metal ends can corrode, and a sharp bend against the wall stresses the hose at the same spot every time the machine moves.
In many Fullerton homes the washer sits in the garage, which limits damage to living space, but water still runs under the door into the house, soaks stored boxes and wets drywall at the bottom of the walls.
What to do the moment it bursts
- Close the washer valves.Turn both the hot and cold hose valves behind the machine clockwise until they stop. If you cannot reach them safely, close the main.
- Cut power to the machine.Unplug the washer only if the plug and outlet are dry and you are standing on a dry surface. Otherwise switch off that circuit at the panel from a dry spot.
- Move water out.Push water out the garage door or toward a floor drain, and lift boxes and anything on the floor.
- Photograph and keep the hose.Take photos before cleanup and keep the burst hose. The failure point tells you whether it was age, a kink or a bad fitting.
- Check the wall behind.Look for wet drywall and insulation at the base of the wall and inside the washer box, and dry it promptly.
Washer hose types
| Hose type | How it holds up | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Plain rubber | The most basic option; rubber ages and cracks over time | Bulges, cracks near the ends, stiffness |
| Braided stainless over rubber | The braid adds burst resistance, but the inner hose still ages | Frayed braid, rust at the crimp, kinks |
| Hoses with built-in flow stops | Designed to close if a sudden surge of flow is detected | Follow the maker's installation and replacement guidance |
Prevention checklist
- Replace both hoses at the same time, following the hose maker's guidance
- Leave a few inches of space so hoses do not kink against the wall
- Close the washer valves when you leave for a trip
- Check that the valves themselves turn and do not drip at the stem
- Look at the hose ends for rust or green corrosion every few months
- Ask a plumber about a single-lever washer valve or an automatic shutoff device
Common questions
Do I need a plumber for a burst washer hose?
Replacing a hose is often simple, but call a plumber if the valves will not close, leak at the stem, or the wall box or drain shows damage.
Why did my hose burst when nobody was using the washer?
The hoses stay under full pressure whenever the valves are open, so they can fail at any time, not just during a wash.
Will the water damage the slab?
A short event on a garage slab usually dries out, but water that reaches drywall, carpet or wood in the house should be dried quickly to avoid mold.
