How they work
A heat pump water heater looks like a tall tank with a fan and compressor on top. It pulls warmth from the air around it, concentrates it and transfers it to the water, much like a refrigerator working in reverse. Most models also have backup electric elements for times of heavy demand.
Because it takes heat from the air, the space around it becomes slightly cooler and drier. In a mild climate like Brea's, an attached garage is often a reasonable spot, while a small closed closet may not have enough air unless it is vented or louvered as the manufacturer requires.
Installation needs
- Space
- Taller than many tanks, with clearance around the top for airflow
- Air volume
- A minimum room volume or ducting, set by the manufacturer
- Power
- Usually a dedicated 240-volt circuit; some newer models plug into a standard outlet
- Condensate
- A drain line for the water the unit pulls from the air
- Straps
- Seismic strapping like any other tank in California
- Permit
- Check with the City of Brea for current requirements
Replacing a gas tank with a heat pump unit
What you remove
- Gas connection, which is capped
- Flue vent, which is removed or sealed
- Burner and pilot maintenance
What you add
- An electrical circuit, possibly with panel work
- A condensate drain
- Room for airflow around the unit
- Some fan and compressor noise while it runs
Deciding whether one fits
- Measure the space.Check height, width and clearance against the model's installation manual.
- Check the panel.Ask an electrician or plumber whether there is capacity and space for a new circuit, or whether a plug-in model would work.
- Plan the drain.Find where condensate can drain by gravity, or ask about a condensate pump.
- Think about noise. The unit hums like a small appliance. A garage is usually fine; a closet next to a bedroom may not be.
- Compare quotes.Ask for the full scope, including electrical work and any changes to the old gas and vent connections.
Questions to ask
- Does this space meet the manufacturer's air volume and clearance rules?
- Will this need a new circuit, and who does the electrical work?
- Where will the condensate drain go?
- What happens to the old gas line and vent?
- Are there current utility or government incentives, and who checks eligibility?
Common questions
Is a heat pump water heater noisy?
It has a fan and compressor, so it makes a steady hum while running, similar to a small refrigerator or dehumidifier. In a garage this is rarely a problem.
Will it work in a closet?
Only if the closet meets the manufacturer's air requirements, which may mean louvered doors or ducting. Check the installation manual with your plumber.
Does a heat pump water heater need to be strapped?
Yes. Like any tank water heater in California, it must be strapped or braced against earthquakes.
